What to expect

How a session works.

A short orientation for first-timers and the curious. Same content we’d talk you through if you turned up cold. Skip ahead if you’re only after the gameplay rules or the kit list.

First time playing badminton?

You’re in the right place.

You don’t need to be any good. You don’t need a partner. You don’t even need your own racket. Wings (the organiser) carries spares at every session, so just turn up and ask. Most of our regulars started with zero club experience and a fair few had never picked up a racket before joining.

Beginners get mixed into rotation alongside more experienced players. One round you’ll be learning from someone stronger, the next you’ll be facing someone closer to your level. Our skill-rating tool (we call it Smart Court Mix) learns where you sit over your first couple of sessions and balances the games from there. There’s no leaderboard you have to climb. Just show up and play.

When we play

Weekday evenings, with the odd weekend.

Most sessions run on weekday evenings, usually 7–9pm. Weekend sessions happen when there’s enough interest. Occasionally a session lands at a different time when a venue slot or a one-off opportunity calls for it.

Every session lists its exact date, time and venue when you book.

A typical session

4 players a court, 4 courts, plus a few extra spots on top.

A typical evening runs 4 players per court across 4 courts, so 16 active at any one time. We book a few more spots on top of that as a buffer for last-minute drops and to give the rotation a bigger pool of partners and opponents to draw from. Typical booked session size is around 18–22.

Games are mixed level and mixed partners every round. Our Smart Court Mix tool balances each round using an ELO-based rating that learns how each player plays over their first few sessions. You’ll see your next court on your phone, and you don’t need to bring a partner.

More on Smart Court Mix and how it came about on the about page.

How we play

Games to 11 or 21. Players decide on court.

Warm up briefly, then get into games. Each game runs to either 11 or 21 points and the players on court agree before serving. When a game ends, you rotate off so the next group can start. Keep warm-ups short so the rotation keeps moving.

We’ve also been trialling games to 15 ahead of the BWF’s scoring change due in 2027. The new rules switch competitive play to best-of-three games to 15. We’re not running the full three-set format at a social session, just borrowing the new game-to-15 length so regulars get used to the cadence ahead of time.

It’s called Social Badminton for a reason. The aim is good games and good people, not winning the night.

What to bring

Trainers, water, a racket.

  • Indoor trainers.
  • A racket. Wings (the organiser) carries spares for anyone who needs one, just ask on the night.
  • A bottle of water. Some venues sell drinks, some don’t.

Feather shuttles are provided (find Wings on the night). Plastic shuttles are also available if conditions call for them.

Booking and payment

Book online. Pay once. Spot confirmed.

Bookings open on the book page as soon as a session is confirmed. Payment is via Stripe (card) and your spot is confirmed the moment the booking goes through. No membership, no monthly fee, no commitment beyond the session you booked.

If a session is full, you can join the waitlist. We’ll email a claim link if a spot opens up.

Cancellation rules and the goodwill window are covered on the refunds page.

The vibe

Friendly first, competitive second.

  • Mix partners every round. You’ll play with different people across the night by design.
  • Rotate off when your game ends. Keeps courts moving and gives everyone fair game time.
  • First time? Just introduce yourself. Everyone here was new once. We make sure you’re not standing around awkwardly.
  • We always take a group photo at the end. By completing your booking you’re agreeing to take part. This is part of the media usage policy you accept at checkout.
  • Respect privacy. Don’t message other players privately without consent.

The full community code is on the community page.

After the session

Stay in the loop.

When you book, the confirmation email includes an invite to our WhatsApp group. That’s where day-to-day chat, last-minute updates and post-game banter happen. The group is reserved for players who’ve actually booked, which keeps it relevant and low-noise.

Session photos go up on our photos page and on Instagram and Facebook. Recaps will land on the recaps page once that section is live.

Got the gist? Pick a night and we’ll see you on court.
