Good games.
Smart Court Mix balances every round so the games stay close. Beginners aren’t stuck against players twice their level. Better players still get a workout. Nobody’s holding up a court.
How Angel Wings Social Badminton grew from a few friends playing weekly at the University of Birmingham into a friendly, pay-as-you-go social badminton community for adults across the city.
Hi, I’m Wings
I picked badminton back up in the summer of 2025. I’d played a bit when I was younger but never seriously. This time around it was a simple thing: I wanted an excuse to stay fit and to see my friends every week.
What started as a few of us booking courts at the University of Birmingham turned into something bigger than I expected. Word spread the way these things do, and each week a few more people would show up. To keep enough players coming back (life happens, plans change, you can’t run a session with three players) I spun up the social channels.
That’s how the WhatsApp group, Instagram, Facebook and a Xiaohongshu (RedNote) presence for our Chinese-speaking players all came about.
Everything grew out of the same simple need. Enough people each week for a good game.

Why I built it
The thing that bugged me about other social badminton sessions in Birmingham was how unsocial they actually were. You’d turn up and have to slot yourself into a court that already had four people on it, or stand around waiting. If you didn’t know anyone, you sat out. If you weren’t confident, you ended up playing the same person all night. That’s not really meeting people.
When Angel Wings was small I sorted it all in my head. I’d scan the hall, spot who wasn’t playing, walk over and pull them onto a court, try to remember who’d played who, and gauge people’s skill from the first few shots they hit. It worked. But it also meant I barely got to play myself. I was too busy running the rotation. (Worth it, honestly.)
What I built
Over time I figured this was the kind of thing a bit of code could solve better than my brain. So I built a small web app for the group with an ELO-based skill rating system that learns how each player plays over their first few sessions. It handles court allocation, balances games by skill, and rotates partners every round. I call it Smart Court Mix. Players see their next court on their phone. Nobody waits for me to do the maths. Best of all, I get to actually play.
The first version of this was a quick Google Apps Script bolted onto a spreadsheet, held together with string. As the group kept growing I rebuilt it properly: a hosted web app with a proper booking system and a friendly leaderboard. What was meant to be a small side-project is now the website you’re looking at.
It’s not just about badminton. It’s about the people you meet along the way.

Book a sessionA typical session
Around 20 of us turn up each session. The community is mostly mid-20s to 40s, all adults (18+), all levels. Some players have been smashing for years. Some bought their first racket the month they joined. You don’t need to be fit or fast or technical. You just need to want a friendly game.
You book your spot ahead of time, pay-as-you-go, no membership. When you arrive you check in and find your first court on the app. We rotate every round so you’ll play with different people each time. Games are mixed level, no partner needed, and the organiser (often me) keeps an eye out for first-timers and makes sure no one’s standing around awkwardly.

Where we play
We’ve played all over the city. Our regular favourites include Aston University Sports Centre, Ark St Albans Academy, Shenley Academy, Harborne Academy and Star King Solomon Academy. We’ve also played at leisure centres like Sandwell Aquatics Centre, and we’re working on hosting a session at Nechells Wellbeing Centre soon.
Each session lists its venue and address when you book.
What players say
I am pretty new to badminton and still learning the rules. I was looking for a social and inclusive club where I could learn from others and have fun in a friendly environment. This is exactly what Angel Wings offers! The group has a good mix of levels and everyone is made to feel welcome.
What I stand for
Smart Court Mix balances every round so the games stay close. Beginners aren’t stuck against players twice their level. Better players still get a workout. Nobody’s holding up a court.
Most players book solo. The rotation puts you with different people every round, and I’m at every session I can be at, watching out for first-timers and keeping the vibe friendly. By the end of the night you’ll know names.
Recaps after every session, a group photo to close the night, shared memories on the socials, and a WhatsApp group most regulars hang out in between sessions. The games bring people together. The atmosphere keeps them coming back.
Most people book solo their first time. By the end of the night you’ll know names.
